7-year-old boy hit by school bus in Mississippi dies

James Rice was hit by a school bus last Friday near Pocahontas and Violet streets. He had a fractured pelvis, a collapsed lunged, a bruised spleen, and damage to his liver and diaphram.

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — The little boy who was hit by a school bus last week in Jackson has died.

A family member tells us that 7-year-old James Rice Jr. passed away Friday morning.

James was hit by a school bus last Friday near Pocahontas and Violet streets. He had a fractured pelvis, a collapsed lunged, a bruised spleen, and damage to his liver and diaphram.

JPS officials told us that he was crossing the street and bent down to tie his shoe when the accident occurred.

Friday morning, Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray went to Johnson Elementary, where James was a 2nd grader, to make a statement about the loss. He also met with the student’s family.

No decision has been made about the bus driver at this time. Dr. Gray asked everyone to remember her as she is mourning during this time as well.
