1 Marine killed, 11 hurt in helicopter hard landing

One Marine was killed and 11 others were injured when their helicopter made a hard landing Wednesday night at Campe Lejeune, North Carolina, the U.S. Marine Corps said.

The Marines aboard the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter were taking part in a training exercise when the accident occurred around 9 p.m., officials said in a statement.

The name of the deceased was not immediately released pending next of kin notification.

Of the 11 hurt, nine were released from the hospital and two are in stable condition. The landing remains under investigation, Capt. Kendra Motz told NBC News.

The accident is the latest in deadly helicopter training accidents involving military members. In March, four National Guardsmen were killed when their Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a training exercise off Florida in heavy fog.

In another mishap in May, one Marine was killed and 22 other Marines were injured when their helicopter went down during a training exercise at Bellows Air Force Base in Hawaii.

On Wednesday, a Black Hawk helicopter from Fort Carson, Colorado, crashed during a hard landing, although none of the four soldiers on board had life-threatening injuries, reported NBC affiliate KUSA.
