COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – A Pee Dee area couple has been charged in the death of an infant.
According to documents released from South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Torress Kwame Burgess, 25, of Florence and Tineshia Shavon Sanders, 25, of Darlington, were arrested Monday in connection to the death. State documents show Burgess and Sanders were each charged with one count of unlawful neglect of a child, a felony that carries up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
While details of the purported crime were not made available, the arrest warrants for Burgess and Sanders each state that a SLED agent found that each suspect “placed [their] 1-month-old child at an unreasonable risk of harm which affected his mental and physical health and well-being.”
Burgess and Sanders were both booked into the Darlington County Detention Center Monday night. According to online booking records from the detention center, bond was set at $20,000 for each of the suspects. Detention center records note the “offense” took place August 22. The infant’s death was investigated by SLED at the request of the Darlington Police Department.
