COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and USC Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley began the school year with a celebration at Carver-Lyon Elementary School in Columbia Wednesday morning.
The partnership between Haley and Staley helps second grade students in rural South Carolina get new sneakers, and teachers get quality supplies to benefit the classroom.
“The bigger impact in helping those young people is they can one day be us,” Coach Staley said. “They can one day lead our state, they can one day lead a university, they can one day lead an entire country.”
Coach Staley said the confidence the students will gain from something as simple as a pair of shoes is not measurable.
Gov. Nikki Haley said, “This is where good people are born and raised if they’re given the attention, and that’s what we are trying to say, all children are precious in South Carolina.”
Gov. Haley said they helped 12 school districts get over 6,000 items and 550 pairs of shoes donated to students and teachers.
She and Coach Staley thanked organizations for their generous donations to their causes.
Innersole is a movement to provide new sneakers to children who are homeless or in need. Coach Dawn Staley is the President.
Gov. Haley is the Chair of The Original Six Foundation, which addresses issues facing SC communities including education, quality of life, and workforce readiness.
