Former Greenville County Deputy facing misconduct charges in court

David Hayes is accused of misconduct in office after investigators say he got payoffs from a convicted gambler and would tip the gambler off about upcoming raids.

(WSPA) – Former Greenville County Deputy David Hays will face a judge Wednesday morning.

Hays was arrested in March.

He’s accused of misconduct in office after investigators say he got payoffs from a convicted gambler and would tip the gambler off about upcoming raids.

The gambler, Izzat Khalil, was cooperating with an FBI Investigation.  He gave up Hays’ name, so he wouldn’t have to stay in prison as long.

Khalil ended up serving a year and a day.

He claims the deputies knew about his operation and allowed it to continue.

He says Hays and another deputy would pass along information about raids. Khalil would give them gifts or money in return.

There is just a preliminary hearing Wednesday, but we could learn key information and evidence in the case that led to some major shakeups at the sheriff’s office.
