August 17, 2015 marks the first day of School for Charleston County Schools, Berkeley County Schools, Colleton County Schools, Dorchester District 2 and 4 schools and Williamsburg Schools. Georgetown County Schools head back to school on Thursday, August 20.
News 2 Today was out in full force to celebrate students heading back to school in the Lowcountry.
On Monday, CCSD welcomes a new leader, Dr. Postlewait, the new Superintendent for the District. The district also welcomes three new schools. Jennie Moore Elementary School for the Creative Arts in Mount Pleasant, Laing Middle School of Science and Technology in Mount Pleasant and St. Andrews Math and Science in West Ashley will open their doors to students for the first time on Monday.
Dr. Postlewait is on a tour of Charleston County Schools on Monday. Here she is visiting Jennie Moore Elementary School.
There are also new things in store for Dorchester District 2 transportation. Near the end of last school year, DD2 decided to not renew their contract with Durham Bus Services and to take over bus operations themselves.
They say the cost of the contract increased back in April. The District thinks they will save about $200K in the school’s operations budget by taking on those bus operations themselves.
The DD2 Transporation Director, Steve Schope, says “We had to start from scratch, we had to hire a staff of 12 and about 150 bus drivers, so that’s been the bulk of what we’ve been trying to do.”
Schope says they now have extra drivers and don’t anticipate delays.
