Man gets sunburn of a lifetime in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – One Myrtle Beach tourist spent a day of his vacation in the doctor’s office after getting sunburnt so badly he had trouble walking.

“Typical man thing,” said Brian Steiner. “I didn’t put the sunscreen on because, *I knew all* and here I am sitting here at med express with my vacation and my wife,” he added.

Steiner is very sunburnt.

His family is visiting from Pittsburgh and he says he fell asleep on the beach and a few hours later he was burnt.  But the burn was so bad he had to see a doctor.

“I’m in extreme pain. The pain on my legs and ankles is so bad,” said Steiner.  His legs and ankles hurt so much he can barely wear shoes or walk and Steiner has a 12 hour drive home to look forward to in a few days.

While Steiner and his wife had a laugh about the situation, sunburns like this could be serious.  “You can basically die from dehydration,” said Cornell Caviness.

Caviness is a physician’s assistant at Doctors Care in Surfside Beach.  He says this is the worst burn he has seen so far this year, but definitely not the only one.

“It started getting warm down here rather early and it’s been sustained temperature in the 90s and it’s been pretty common,” said Caviness.  And it definitely will not be the last.

“Insufficient sunscreen or direct sun exposure for a prolonged period of time, and this is what you get,” said Caviness.

These may seem obvious, but people still end up at the doctor’s office for burns.

Caviness says the best bet is to stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time during the day, and always wear sunscreen when you are outside.
