North Charleston, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons of hockey in the Lowcountry, agreed to terms with defenseman Wade Epp, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced Friday.
In his first professional season last year, Epp, 26, finished third among Stingrays defenseman in points (20) and assists (20), second on the team with 88 penalty minutes and tied for third on the Stingrays with a plus-minus rating of +19 in 61 contests. The Chilliwack, British Columbia, native appeared in all 27 Kelly Cup Playoff games, picking up four assists and helped the Stingrays reach the Kelly Cup Finals for the fourth time in team history.
“It was a ‘no-brainer’ after last season’s experiences after winning 23 games in a row and reaching the Kelly Cup Finals,” said Epp. “I have a lot invested within the organization and I love everyone from the top down. I feel like Spencer and I have a good understanding of what kind of player I and where I fit into his system. It was an easy decision to come back.”
Prior to turning pro, Epp completed a four-year career Northern Michigan University totaling 34 points (nine goals, 25 assists) in 141 games.
“He had a good start to his pro career last year,” added Carbery. “He grew a lot and made huge strides from the beginning of the year. He was in the lineup every night and was huge on the penalty kill. I’m looking for Wade to build off of that next year and it’s a big year. He’s settled in and he knows what type of player he is.”
