UPDATE: The inmate has been identified by Deputy Coroner, Dottie Lindsay, as Joyce Curnell, 50, of Edisto Island. The autopsy is pending at this time.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.
On Wednesday,July 22, around or a little before 5:00 p.m., while detention officers were making security rounds in their assigned housing unit, a middle age black female inmate was found unresponsive.
The inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.
The inmate was booked in to the Sheriff Cannon Detention Center on July 21, 2015, by members of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding bench warrant for shoplifting. Prior to being booked into the Detention Center on July 21, 2015, the inmate was seen at an area hospital for an apparent medical issue.
As a standard practice of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, whenever an incident involves an in-custody death or a use of force resulting in a death, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is requested to conduct an investigation in to the incident.
The identification of the inmate and the autopsy will be handled by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
