CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating vandalism at a second church on James Island.
Major Eric Watson with the Sheriff’s Office says shortly after 9:30 a.m., Thursday, July 23, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 1890 Central Park Avenue on James Island to investigate a report of vandalism to James Island United Congregational Church.
We’re told upon deputies’ arrival, it obviously appeared that someone had vandalized the church by gun fire. Deputies noted several bullet holes in various parts of the outside of the church. The caretaker of the church found the vandalism and reported it to the Sheriff’s Office. The church was unoccupied when this incident occurred and no other vandalism was done to the church.
Our detectives and crime scene investigators canvassed the neighborhood to gather information and to process the scene.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is working in connection with other law enforcement agencies, to include the FBI, in this investigation. Anyone with information about this incident can call Consolidated Dispatch at 743-7200 and ask for the on-call Charleston Police detective or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
United Congressional Church is located on the same road as Bethel AME Church where Charleston PD is investigating possible bullet holes found in the front window.
