MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The Coast Guard has ended its search for two fishermen missing off the South Carolina coast.
The Coast Guard said in a statement Sunday night that it had searched nearly 12,000 square miles for the men who have been missing since Wednesday evening.
The Coast Guard says 77-year-old Joseph McFadden and 61-year-old Michael Lawrence were reported missing Thursday morning. They had gone fishing near the Charleston Jetties on Wednesday. Their truck and boat trailer were found at Remley’s Point.
Capt. Gary Tomasulo says the decision to stop a search is difficult.
The Coast Guard says units from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida took part in the search. Police in North Charleston and Mount Pleasant, the Charleston County sheriff’s office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources helped.
