Hit-and-run under investigation in Colleton County

Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run in Colleton County after a man was found in a ditch near Cross Swamp Road.

LCpl Hannah Wimberly with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says troopers received the call at 9:40am on Monday, July 6. Colleton Fire-Rescue was notified after someone spotted the man unconscious in the ditch. Medics say evidence at the scene showed the man, later identified as Raphael Martinez, was struck by a vehicle and possibly been there most of the night.

Officials say Cross Swamp Road near the scene of the accident was closed for two hours while Law Enforcement and the Coroner’s Office conducted an investigation. 

We’re now learning Yolanda Breland, 28, turned herself in to Colleton County Sheriff’s Office with her attorney on Tuesday, July 7 at 4:40pm in connection to the hit-and-run. Breland was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban when she struck a Martinez on Cross Swap Road.

She’s being charged with hit and run involving death and is currently being held at the Colleton County Detention Center.  Authorities say other charges are still pending.
