The Charleston Fire Department and automatic aide partners have responded to numerous calls throughout today regarding an isolated barrier island that is on fire.
The island is located along the Stono River near Rushland Landing Road on Johns Island. Fire personnel have accessed the island and have extinguished as much of the fire as possible. Smoldering fires may continue through the night.
The island is approximately 3-4 acres in size and is vacant and isolated away from the neighborhood. The fire poses no danger to nearby residents.
Residents of Rushland Landing and Headquarters Plantation may see smoke or fire on the island. Residents unsure if it is an emergency should dial 9-1-1 so that the fire department can investigate.
Fire personnel will continue to monitor the fire throughout the night and into tomorrow morning.
