Victims of Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston identified

CHARLESTON, SC – Nine people were killed Wednesday night when a shooter opened fire at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston during a prayer meeting.

At a press conference Thursday Coroner Rae Wooten identified the victims as Myra Thompson, 59, Susie Jackson, 87, Rev. Sharonda Singleton, 45, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, 49, Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr., 74, Tywanza Sanders, 26, Cynthia Hurd, 54, Ethel Lance, 70, SC Senator Clementa Pinckney, 41.

Authorities say just after 9 p.m Wednesday night 21-year-old Dylann Roof allegedly killed nine people at Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston.

According to witnesses, the suspect stood up and said he was there “to shoot black people.” A survivor told other media outlets that the shooter said, “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.”
