Confederate memorial downtown vandalized

CHARLESTON, SC – A Confederate Memorial in downtown Charleston was found vandalized Sunday morning (June 21, 2015).

The statue is at the White Point Garden area of the Battery, saying “To the Confederate Defenders of Charleston – Fort Sumter.” The statue was placed by The United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Someone vandalized the statue with red spray paint that read, “Black Lives Matter” and “This was the problem #racist.” On the other side of the statue, “Riley & Haiely this is the root of our evil, why def-fend this evil” and “Bill Oreii is found racism” were also written.

Several people covered the base of the statue with a tarp just after noon Sunday.

The City of Charleston Parks Department was notified in reference to the cleanup and photos have been submitted to the Police Department for evidence.

CPD is investigating. Stay with News 2 for updates.
