Summerville High School is a big school in a small community, and they’re proud to say they hold small community values. They are champs when it comes to the three A’s, academics, arts, athletics. This morning, we’re in Dorchester District Two for our Cool School of the week.
Summerville High School has nearly 29-hundred students. Students excel in academics, the arts, and athletics. SHS is proud of it’s award winning marching band, which recently won the South Carolina Band Directors Association 5A State Championship.
The school also has award winning media technology, WAVE-TV, which offers students hands-on experience in the exploration of broadcast journalism. Students air a daily seven minute newscast that features school and community
news. There are 42 students in the program. WAVE-TV has represented Summerville High School through numerous competition, and brought home numerous top awards. Principal Kenny Farrell says, “We have an outstanding engineering program. Our fine arts program is second to none, our athletics, we want to be a renaissance school. We want to be the best that we can be at everything.” Media Technology teacher AJ Chambers says, “Summerville High School is a Cool School because we get students college and career ready. Students in my program can go right into college with the skills they learn in entry level classes. They produce movie packages and short films, and they’re hands on doing the work.”
Junior Betsy Bullock says, “Since we got new additions to our set and new equipment, we’ve really swept competitions. We got best in state in all state broadcast, and we’ve really done a lot these last two years.” Math teacher Kelly Donoghue says, “Summerville High School is a cool school because we have a lot of school spirit. We just have fun. We have a good time.”
Summerville High School offers an award winning and interesting photography class. Students placed in top 3 for black and white and color photos at the Coastal Carolina Fair.
