The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigation an officer-involved shooting involving a Georgetown County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The incident resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman who has alleged mental health issues.
“At approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 12, 2014, Georgetown County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Ashcraft Circle in the Litchfield Beach Community of Georgetown County for a welfare check. Sheriff’s deputies were contacted by a family member concerned for her well-being and a legal representative that the subject was in a bathroom with a knife threatening to harm herself,” Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Carrie Cuthbertson said.
“Sheriff’s deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence and located the property manager who unlocked the door. When sheriff’s deputies were clearing the residence, the female allegedly charged the deputies with a knife. A sheriff’s deputy at that moment used lethal force to stop the subject,” Cuthbertson added.
