Berkeley Elementary school has national distinction. We’re in Moncks Corner for our last Cool School of the week before the summer break.

Berkeley Elementary is a pre-k through second grade school with 700 students from the Moncks Corner, Cordsville, and Bonneau areas of Berkeley county.

The Title One school is a National School of Character. They celebrate the fine arts through music, dance, literature, and drama. Berkeley Elementary is the only school in the district with a first and second grade multi-age program. At the end of the school year, students get to enjoy a book parade which showcases their favorite books from the school year. Principal Tracy Gaskins says, “We’re a Cool School because we really are passionate about our students here. We love them. We want to set them up for success. We’re the foundation for what they carry with them when they leave us. They’re very young students, very impressionable, and we want to teach them they have a voice. We want to empower them to make amazing choices.”

Kindergarten student Hailey Bryant says, “The hallways area peaceful and you have to be kind to everyone.” Teacher of the year Heather Chappelear

says, “We have a great staff here at Berkeley Elementary. Everybody works together as a family, and the outmost important thing for us here is to do whatever the children need, and do what’s best for the students, so we carry on the character, the peaceful motto to the children, and they all have instilled that in them as well.”

Berkeley Elementary has several service learning projects that includes Jump Rope for Heart for the American Heart Association, Pennies for Patients for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and support for the Wounded Warriors Project.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we’ll take a look at Berkeley Elementary’s character education program.
