Flowertown Elementary is a quaint small-town themed school with strong academics, arts, and healthy living initiatives. We’re in Summerville for Cool School of the week.

Flowertown Elementary is a Palmetto Gold award winning school with 1,075 preschool through fifth grade students. Flowertown was named a 2012-2013 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The school has an excellent absolute and excellent growth rating on the state report card, and made AYP for the past ten years. Students in all grade levels make use of the outside classroom.

The small town theme is emphasized throughout the school, with displays of decorative billboards depicting summerville store fronts. Principal Donna Goodwin says their theme, “Believe,” captures the heart and soul of who they are as a school community. Goodwin says, “A school building is really just brick and mortar, but the magic that happens when those tiny toes step across our threshold. We begin to know that little person, and they grow and flourish in our environment. We create this relationship with that person, and their family, and so when they leave us at the end of the year or when they leave in fifth grade, its so special because we developed a bond with that family and to me that’s why Flowertown is a Cool School. Fifth grade student Catherine Garcia says, “Our teachers are excellent. They’re just plain excellent. The staff is so friendly, always say good morning or hi how are you doing.” Fifth grade student Drake Nisbit says, “We have a great history. In just about everything we do and our quiz bowl teams. We have lots of our extra curricular activity teams that are very good.” Literacy support teacher Jessica Farnsworth says, “We have amazing students, amazing faculty members, amazing teachers, and administration, and even the parents and community members we have active business partners. It’s just a great place to be.” “They’re fun to be with,” says first grade student Amaya Jefferson. Second grade student, Armani Jefferson says, “I love P.E., and the music teacher and the PE teachers are cool teachers, and our school is always National Blue Ribbon.”

The Bee Bots Robotics team went to state competition this year. The Baby Bees community outreach program for three year old “future bee’s” is for siblings of Flowertown students.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we’ll tell you about Flowertown’s healthy living initiatives.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at, maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
