Strong athletics and technology programs, the Berkeley Middle School Bucks in Moncks Corner are proud of their school. They’re working hard to make academic gains. We’re in Berkeley county for our Cool School of the week.
Berkeley Middle School is a diverse school with 11-hundred students in grades 6 through 8. Berkeley is a Positive Behavior Interventions School and students earn Berkeley Bucks they can use in the school store.
The school has 21 Junior Scholars. BMS won the district quiz bowl this year, and had two of the top 12 spellers in the district. BMS pride is a program that promotes civic involvement.. Students have repainted football fields, cleaned graffiti off area buildings to exude pride in their school.
Principal Mike Wilkerson says their proud of all the advantages the school’s technology provides. Mr. Wilkerson says, “We are technology driven school. We’re excited about the opportunities that we are able to give all of our students when it comes to technology. When it comes to taking higher classes, high school credit classes, we have opportunities for clubs, Junior Beta Club. We have a new BMS Pride group that we’re very proud of, so we have lots of opportunities for our students both in and out of the classroom, and that’s why we’re a Cool School.” Eighth grade student Kailey Swiney says, “I believe Berkeley Middle School is a Cool School because we have great academics and extra curricular activities. Personally I’m a cheerleader, and I’m in Junior Beta Club here, and through Beta Club we’ve done many service projects around this community.” Honors English teacher Melissa Meverden says, “We try to go above and beyond to make sure we’re serving everybody. As a teacher, I’m so impressed by how dedicated all of our teachers are, working hard to support students, we have a lot of academic supports in place especially this year to help our students out.” Eighth grade student Robbie Fleming says, “I think Berkeley Middle School is a Cool School. We have so many classes to offer that would fit everyone’s needs. We have Algebra One, honors English One, and Spanish One for example to to get ready for high school, also gives us high school credits if you take those classes.”
Berkeley Middle School also offers a variety of sports in it’s popular sports program. They also have the only weight lifting class for middle school in the district.
Berkeley has a daily “working” lunch for students that need extra help and tutoring in all subject areas, before and after school tutoring as well.
Beta Clubs students volunteer all over the Lowcountry. Mentors from the community come in bi-weekly to work with students.
Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we’ll take a look at how Berkeley Middle stays ahead of the curb when it comes to technology.
