From strings, to band, to academic improvement, St. Andrew’s Middle School is making moves. The school is located off of Wappoo Road in West Ashley, and has 331 students, including students from the Maryville Ashleyville community of West Ashley.
St. Andrew’s school building use to be a high school, and is the only middle school in Charleston county with an auditorium and a full size high school football stadium.
St. Andrews Middle is a Palmetto Silver award wining school for performance and closing the achievement gap. This year two students were identified by the South Carolina Department of Education as Junior Scholars based on their exceptional score on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Interim principal Lawanda Glears says St. Andrews is a diverse school with a family atmosphere. Glears says, “We believe the students need to be well rounded, and so we do whatever we can to infuse all types of clubs and activities for our kids. We also involve our kids in extra curricular activities, such as football, basketball, and we also provide the academics where they compete in Odyssey of the Minds, the oratorical contest, just to name a few.”
Seventh-grade student Angel Bishop-Vargas says,”The faculty, staff, and teachers, and well it’s a good school to be at.” Teacher of the year John Murray says, “I believe St. Andrews is a Cool School because of the people. From the administration, to the office staff, to the faculty, but mostly the children. The children make us a Cool School. We’re here for them, and they do such a fabulous job, and we’re just glad that we can be honored by Channel 2 to be the Cool School.” Seventh-grade-student Hailey Barfield says, “I think what makes St. Andrews a Cool School is that they have awesome programs like OM, and teachers always do their best to make sure we understand what we’re learning. It makes me feel like they actually care, more than just a teacher, they want us to succeed in life.”
St. Andrews has a parent resource center, where parents and students receive help if needed. It helps parents with parenting techniques, budgeting, resume writing, jobs search, and communication skills.
St. Andrews has a Wildcats school store which allows students to purchase supplies with School Pride Paws, they earn from positive behavior.
The school participates in several service projects, Toys for Tots, can food drive, and the United Way.
