Cool School: College Park Middle School

Students at College Park Middle School are on the move in the right direction. We’re in Berkeley county for our Cool School of the week.

College Park Middle School in Ladson has 760 students in six through 8th grades. The diverse Title One school has a comprehensive academic and arts program, which features strings, chorus, and band. C.P.M. is a Red Carpet School, and offers four high school credit classes, English, foreign language, math, and computer technology. College Park Middle School is also recognized as an exemplary positive behavior interventions and support school.

Principal Ingrid Dukes says, “College Park Middle School is a very diverse unique school here in Berkeley county. Probably the biggest reason we’re a Cool School is because we have an amazing faculty staff and students.” Sixth-grade-student Jamel Baylock says, “Our principal, when there is a thing going on, and there is somebody bullying somebody, she will stop it, and when she tells them to stop, it stops automatically. My teachers, they help me learn, and help me get a better education.” Eighth-grade-student Sarah Creel says, “I have a Cool School because all the teachers here are so nice, and they teach you all the skills you need to go to high school. All the principals, and all the teachers are a good support for you and everything you do.”

Teacher of the year Katie Scheaffer says, “Every single person in this building is committed to one of the components of our making middle grades work frame-work, which is that all students matter. On a daily basis, we are all committed to doing what is best for students.” Sixth-grade-student Christopher Castillo says, “Transition camp helps you learn about our school, and where the places are, and there are after school clubs. There is Google camp for the googlers.”

College Park Middle School has a clothing closet named after a student who passed away two years ago, Ryan White. All the items are donated, and items are available for students, family, and community members in need. Students run the clothing center. They staff and launder the clothing.

Northwood Church is a huge sponsor for the school, and helps students and families in need.
