Engaged students, innovative programs, unique partnerships, awards, Joseph Pye Elementary School in Dorchester county has a lot to be proud of. We're in Ladson for our Cool School of the week.

Joseph Pye Elementary is named after Dorchester District Two's superintendent. Now in it's third year, the Title One school has 850 students in pre-k through 5th grades. Since it's opening, Pye has received Palmetto Gold and Silver awards for student achievement, and excellent ratings on the state report card. Students start talking about college in kindergarten.

Pye offers single gender classes as an option for 4th and 5th grade. Students use wobble seats, yoga balls, and other alternative learning centers to create a brain-friendly classroom environment. The school uses a travel theme to promote positive behavior. Students earn incentives depending on their level of travel coach, business, or first class.

Principal Wanda Carroll Williams says students are encouraged to explore, discover, and learn something new everyday. Williams says, “Pye Elementary is the coolest school in the Lowcountry, number one, we are a family here at Pye. We are a strong community of learners. We've been able to put our vision into practice and implement it every single day with our children. We make sure that we target every single child, every single day.” Fifth grade student Trinity Green says, “I honestly think that our school is a cool school because our teachers put in so much time in effort to give us what we need to go to middle school.” Teacher of the year Allyson Kahler says, “We're a Cool School because we build strong relationships with our communities, the business partners, the families, our students. The students feel safe to express their ideas and thoughts to me and the teachers, and those relationships are really really important.” Fifth grade student Taylor Clark says, “We have a STEAM lab. STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics, and we have so many posters. Everybody who works here puts in a lot of effort to make our school a better place.”

Pye Elementary's 5th grade math class scored first in the district for the first quarter. Pye also has a Going Green class and students use Ipads.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll take a look at Pye Elementary's STEAM initiative, and we'll also tell you why a pie has special meaning at Pye Elementary..
