Charleston man rescued on Drum Island

The Ravenel Bridge was the scene of a water rescue Sunday after several witnesses called police about a man spotted on Drum Island, disoriented and cold.

It happened around 8 a.m. Rescue crews were dispatched to the Ravenel Bridge runner's path after several witnesses called 9-1-1 to report a man was on Drum Island. According to the Charleston Police report, “the victim was going back and forth between floating in the shallow water and laying on the shore in a fetal position.”

Mount Pleasant Fire and Rescue crews rappelled down to the island from the pedestrian walkway and attended to the victim. He was placed on a North Charleston Fire boat and taken ashore and was transported to Medical University of South Carolina Hospital.

The Victim told police he was working at Art's Bar and Grill and after work began drinking heavily. Police say the victim couldn't remember how he got into the water from the bar because he was “extremely intoxicated.”

The victim's injuries didn't appear to be life threatening.
