Berkeley County Middle College High is a county wide magnet school that offers a unique educational experience for students. We're in Moncks Corner for our Cool School of the week.
Berkeley County Middle College High, called B.M.C for short is located on the campus of Trident Technical College Berkeley Campus. In it's fourth year, it's the only magnet high school in Berkeley county. The school currently has 56 juniors and 46 seniors from the district's seven high schools.
B.M.C is the first and only school of its kind in the Lowcountry. Working in collaboration with Trident Technical College, the middle college encourages and eases transitions into a college environment. At no cost to students, they have an opportunity to achieve high school and college academic success. Students can earn college credit toward a certificate, degree, or transferable credit on a college campus. Principal Claire Freeman says, “Every school in Berkeley county is a Cool School. Ours is uniquely cool because we're located on a college campus. Some of them are getting an Associates degree a month before they get their high school diploma. They are walking out of here feeling prepared for the college world.” Junior Katelyn Watson says, “I love Berkeley Middle College. The main reason why I chose to come here and why I think it's a Cool School is because of the college classes that we're able to take. We have a unique situation where we're able to take both traditional high school classes, as well dual credit courses through Trident Tech, so if we take full advantage of the program, we could graduate at the end of our senior year with both a high school diploma and associates degree from Trident.” Teacher Lance Parrish, “We have the ability to really individualize our instruction with students because we're so small. We know just about everything that you could about the students so we can cater everything to them and for them.”
Berkeley County Middle College has a Beta club, National Honor Society, book clubs, and principals council. Twenty-five-percent of the students at BMC participate in athletic activities at their home high schools.
Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll take a closer look at this unique opportunity for students.
