Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville has a long list of points of pride, from academics, to athletics, to the arts. We're in Dorchester county for our Cool School of the week.
School spirit soars at Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville. Pinewood is celebrating 60 years of educating students throughout the Lowcountry. The private school has more than 700 students in pre-k-3 through 12th grade. Pinewood is proud of it's challenging college prep curriculum, and has received numerous awards in it's three core areas, academics, athletics, and the arts.
Students learn leadership skills and how they can make an impact on the world in the school's new global scholars program. They also have an international program with nearly fifty students from more than a dozen countries. The lower school program focuses on a rigorous liberal arts curriculum infused with technology. School leaders say Pinewood provides a foundation for success in a family atmosphere. Head of School Steve Mandell says, “The average teaching experience at Pinewood is 16 years or more. So you have people uniquely engaged, uniquely involved, all for the mission of helping these kids go off to college. Pinewood is a college preparatory school, 100-percent of our students go on to college, so that's a mission they all share academically.” Eighth grade student Maryah Nasir says, “Everyone is family here, and it's nice. The teachers are nice, students are nice, and I think it's really cool because of that.” Senior Emily Pelcher says, “I feel like the classes are smaller, and I get to interact with my teacher, and there is also a lot of options for different classes.” “I think Pinewood is a cool school because we go after excellence in every area, not just athletics but academics, drama, art. It doesn't matter what Pinewood does, it goes after it 100-percent,” says basketball coach Pat Eidson.
Students from all over the Lowcountry attend Pinewood. They have thirty academic teams and clubs, including chess, quiz bowl, and robotics.
Last year's graduates earned $4.1-million-dollars in scholarship offerings, nearly 53-thousand-dollars per graduate.
Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll take a closer look at Pinewood's triple-A winning combination, academics, athletics, and the arts.
