They're a small rural school in Berkeley county, Macedonia Middle School has big bragging rights. We're in the Macedonia community near Moncks Corner for our first Cool School of the week for the new school year.
The high performing school has 365 students in 6th through 8th grades. Macedonia is a Red Carpet school, and has several Palmetto Gold and silver wards awards for student performance and closing the achievement gap.
The talented students create the impressive art work on display throughout the building. Students work hard for incentives like Coastal Café. Students earn “café credit” for demonstrating good behavior, good grades, citizenship, character.
Principal Janie Langley says Macedonia has a lot to be proud of. She says, “We say it's Berkeley county's best kept secret. We're cool because we have wonderful students. We have great parents that support us. We have a fabulous staff, everyone will go the extra mile. It's never ever that's not my job. We do a lot of community work.”
Eighth grader Matthew Campbell says, “We do archery and we have a lot of extra after school activities.” “At Macedonia every time you turn a corner, there is someone you know, or knows your family and it's really family friendly. I think my school is cool because not only do they tech you the fundamentals, but they also teach you things you need to learn later in life as an adult,” says eighth grade student Adrienne Waites. Assistant principal Amanda Adair says, We're a rural school, and we don't get the recognition I think. We're high performing, and our students do a great job. There are a lot of things bundled up in one that makes us a cool school.”
Macedonia Middle offers archery and several clubs, including trebuchet club, fitness club, Fox patrol, which is a student safety patrol, and a jazz band. The school's band received “superior” rating from the South Carolina Band Directors Association.
Macedonia received the National Distinguished principal award for the state.
Coming up Wednesday on News 2 today, we'll tell you about the “Read 100″ program,” a newly implemented initiative designed to strengthen the reading skills of students across all grade levels.
