The South Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans plans protests in North Charleston and Conway against proposed changes to Social Security that would cut future increases tied to inflation.

The demonstrations Tuesday will be in front of the office of Sen. Tim Scott in North Charleston and in front of the Social Security office in Conway.

Organizers say demonstrators at both events will hold hands and form a human chain to protest changing the way Social Security increases are calculated with an accounting method called chained CPI.

More than 600,000 South Carolinians over the age of 65 receive Social Security retirement benefits and more than 300,000 receive supplemental security income and disability income.
