Small class sizes, more one on one instruction, St. John Catholic School is focused on providing individualize instruction at all levels. We're in his in North Charleston for our Cool School of the week.

Saint John catholic school has a proud history that dates back 65 years. Originally the school served Navy and Air Force families, and was as large as over 200 students. With the closing of the Navy yard, and the loss of military families, the school experienced a decline in population.

St. John Catholic school made a decision to capitalize on its small numbers. Principal Carole White says, “We're a small school, but we're are intentionally small, so we can be inclusive. We can individualize and accept students with all kinds of different learning styles. They come to us because we have small classes.”

The Catholic school attracts students from many different backgrounds, students who prefer smaller learning environments, including students with special needs. Therapists work with special needs students in inclusive classrooms. Occupational therapist Kristin Varn says, “It's an amazing school. It's very welcoming. It is a community, and it's a family and so we want them to be a part of the family. It helps them learn as well. They can learn from other students doing the activities that they should be doing, and it motivates them to want to be like their friends and peers.”

Enrollment is limited to 15 students per class. Seventh grade student Abigail Elmore says, “We get one on one help, and we have special kids we help them individualize.”

Students say good things come in small packages. Eighth grade student DaShauna Lewis says,”I like it a lot because of the small classes and the teachers they're head on with you when you're learning.” Every classroom has it's own individualized specialty. I came from a big school. It had like 26/27 people in it. It was always chattering. Here i find it better because I can concentrate more,” says eighth grade student Eric Nazon.

St. John Catholic School has an after school care program and homework club as well. Coming up Friday on News 2 Today, we will present St. John Catholic School with our Cool School award.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com. Maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
