Talent and academic success, students at Rollings Middle School of the Arts take pride in both. We're in Summerville for our Cool School of the week.

Strings, piano, band, theatre, chorus, dance, visual arts, you can find it at Rollings Middle School of the Arts, a magnet school in Dorchester District Two. The school, a welcoming environment, has 660 students in six through eighth grade. Rollings is a Palmetto's Finest school, and since 1998, has received Palmetto Gold awards for high achievement and closing the achievement gap. They have excellent ratings on school report cards, dedicated teachers, and involved parents.

Principal Kathy Sobolewski says, “It's a Cool School because of the culture that is here. The culture is very special, it's unique. It's a small school. It's very family like. Our building is old, but it's kind of like being in grandma's house, it's very warm and inviting.” Sixth grade student Ava Barros says, “It's really great because we all get to meet new people while doing our core, which is our talent.”

Visual arts teacher Kevin Morrissey says, “I think one of the things that make people cool is being confident and comfortable in who they are, and I think our students really exhibit that confidence, and trust and belief in themselves and who they are.” “Besides getting the education you need, you come here and get to express what you love, your creativity,” says sixth grade student Mackenzie Mulheir. Seventh grade student Wyatt Mazyck says, “It's very very good to do something that you're passionate about, and at Rollings Middle School of the Arts, it's not just a name that makes us look good, we prove that we're actually a good school, and it feels really good to be at a school like this.” “It gives us a lot of opportunity to succeed in our future because we learn more about what we're talented at,” says eighth grade student Alexis Dipierno

Rollings incorporated the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People leadership model this year. Also in 2012, the school had the third highest absolute score for middle schools in the state, and first for a non-academic magnet school. Every year, they place in the top three middle schools in the Quest competition.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll take a closer look at the school's stellar arts program.
