Oakbrook Middle School offers unique programs and makes learning fun for students. We're in Dorchester district two for our cool school of the week.

Oakbrook Middle School has nearly a thousand student from Ladson, North Charleston, and Summerville. The Palmetto Gold award winning school, with excellent ratings on the State Report Card is the only middle school in the district with a family and consumer science class, which teaches life skills.

To promote positive behavior, the school created the SOAR program, which stands for Success through Outstanding Achievement and Relationships. Students receive SOAR awards, SOAR cards, SOAR bucks. Students take pride in their community projects. Last year, they raised more than 10-thousand-dollars for Relay for Life. Principal Brion Rutherford says, “What makes Oakbrook Middle School a special place to be is the feeling of family, not only between the adults, but also between the students, and the relationships that our teachers work hard on a daily basis to forge with our students.” Seventh grade student Alexandria Barton says, “Our teachers interact with us a lot. Our principals are always giving us high five. We're always around the teachers and we have a lot of fun.” The students are smart and we have a good sports teams, and how we won the championship for football and wrestling,” says seventh grade student Luke Botelho. Seventh grader Tay Tay Maung says, “I like how the teachers are really down to earth and nice.” Teacher Alice Boyer says, “We do the most awesome things, like the shamrock shuffle we did last week as a whole school. We did the cupcake run as a whole school. Our athletic programs are amazing here. It's just always an exciting fun time to come to Oakbrook every morning and you always have a big smile on your face when you're here.”

Students with no discipline referrals have an opportunity to watch administrators attempt to do fun activities, like sumo wrestling match between the principal and assistant principal. They also had a dance off between the administration and students.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll tell you about a partnership with SPAWAR that's helping students improve their math skills.
