Hanahan Middle School has true Hawk pride. Students at the award winning school have many talents. We're in Berkeley county for our Cool School of the week.

Hanahan Middle School has 835 students in fifth through eighth grades. The Palmetto Gold award winning school has excellent ratings on the school's report card for the last three years. The Red Carpet and Exemplary Reading Honor school also has an award winning band. For 27 years, they've won the outstanding performance award from the South Carolina Band Directors Association.

Principal Robin Rogers says his school is a community school with supportive parents, a caring and involved community, a committed faculty and staff, students eager to learn, with a strong sense of pride. Just last week, Hanahan Middle School was named a Palmetto's Finest School. Rogers says, “it's a great honor. It validates the hard work and dedication these teachers put forth on daily basis. Also validates student achievement, because we have great things going on with our students here at Hanahan Middle School.” Eighth grade student Akil Dunn says, “We represent our school with orange and blue pride all over Hanahan. I like how it's all a community here. We all know each other. Most of my friends, I've known them since the fifth grade, so we've grown up in middle school together, so you get a really close friendship through high school. That's what keeps us from bullying and all of that, because we all know each other and we can stand up for each other if it happens.” Teacher Dana Soloff says, “We have lots of different programs, different things for the kids to do, really just a great environment.” Eighth grade student Laura White says, “We have great incentive programs, and the teachers really strive for us to do well. Our principal and guidance counselors, we are all friendly with each other, and we all know each other really well, and have confidence in each other so we trust each other a lot.”

Hanahan Middle School participates in various community service projects, and has raised more than 20-thousand-dollars for charities. They have a school-wide recycling program. The school's engineering program, Gateway to Technology received national recognition the last three years in a row. Also, students participate in Rachel's Challenge, a national anti-bullying program.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll tell you about their incentives and rewards program that has students reaching for books.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com. Maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
