Ashley River Creative Arts is nationally recognized for it's arts integration program. It's a community school with a unique curriculum. We're in West Ashley for our Cool School of the week.

From dance, to music, to drama, Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary has it all. Co-principal Jayne Ellicott says, “Our children have dance, and they have drama, and they have music, and they have an opportunity to go to violin, but in addition to that, we integrate the arts in the classroom. You may see children singing about history standards, or subjects, or you may see them doing poetry about a science standard they're studying or to math.”

Fourth grade student Atlantius Terry says, “Sometimes you get to do a project in class, and you do the same thing in art also.” Fourth grade student Thomas Abraham says, “We were doing an art project in drama. I think having the arts is really fun and it's a great experience.”

The magnet school is a shining star when it comes to academics. The arts integration program is recognized nationally as a leader and model for other schools. Teacher Susan Brandon says, “It helps the students better understand what we're learning. They're more engaged, and they remember what they learn because they are fully engaged.” Fifth grade student Oliver Lewis says, “It just makes it a lot more interesting, and I can remember things more.” “I like that we get to learn spanish and drama, and all different things that will help us in the future with whatever we decide to do,” says fifth grader Abigael Byrne.

Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary is a Kennedy Center School of Distinction. Students also had the honor of performing there. The school

received the Verner award from the South Carolina Arts Commission for outstanding achievement and contributions to the arts in South Carolina.

The school is host to many groups from across the nation to learn about arts integration, and has been featured in several magazines, including Newsweek. Ashley River students have big hearts, each grade level sponsors a community outreach project to raise money and awareness.
