Jane Edwards Elementary is a small rural community school with a lot of charm. We're on Edisto Island for our Cool School of the week.
The school is set in a quaint environment on Edisto Island, and is named after Ms. Jane Edwards, an educator on Edisto.
Students in child development through sixth grade have small class sizes. Jane Edwards has received the Palmetto Silver award for academics for several years, and Palmetto Gold award for improvement.
The buddies program brings sixth grade and c-d students together to work in the school's garden. Students also have hands-on opportunities to learn about the ecology of the Ace Basin. Jane Edwards has a school-wide mentoring program which matches community volunteers with students.
The school has a full time Communities in Schools student support specialist. The Panthers are thankful for their strong community support.
Principal Susan Miles says, “It's a quaint environment. I just can't say enough about our children and wonderful staff. They all want to be sure our children have every opportunity to learn.” Communities in Schools student support specialist Amanda Fox says, “A lot of times there are things that students need, like basic needs, and support and other activities to get them out of classroom and using those skills in real life. Our community is just fantastic at that. We're a good community school.” Sixth grade student Joshua Cales says, “We have a garden. We have buddies. We have real cool teachers.”
The last two weeks of school all students receive swimming lessons. Jane Edwards is a Positive Behavior Intervention Support school. They also received the Community of Readers award several years.
Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll tell you about a program where students are learning curriculum standards through boat building.
We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at firstname.lastname@example.org. Maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
