Oprah helped the Lowcountry bring in tourists post Hurricane Hugo (Image 1)

In the weeks after Hurricane Hugo, Oprah Winfrey taped her show in Charleston.

She is credited with raising more than a million dollars in relief funds and letting the world know Charleston was open for business the following tourism season.

“Having someone of that recognition was a breath of fresh air for people in the community,” North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey remembered.
